Conservatives lose power in Castle Point after a decade

A UKIP surge in south Essex has deprived the Conservatives of their overall majority on Castle Point Council.

The Tories had run the council in the Canvey Island since 2003 and are still the biggest single party but one seat short of a working majority.

UKIP made five gains at the expense of the Conservatives and took the seat of the Conservative leader of the council Pam Challis.
