Family hold vigil for 'popular' Bedford 17-year-old stabbed to death

The family of a sixth former who was stabbed to death at a bus station have laid flowers at the scene and held a vigil.

Thomas Taylor, 17, was attacked by a group of young men at 5.50pm on Wednesday near Bedford's bus station, suffering serious injuries and dying in hospital a short time later, Bedfordshire Police said.

His sixth form - Bedford Academy - said he was "a popular, well-liked, and respected lad" and it was supporting family, students and staff with his "tragic loss".

Police said the suspected attackers, described as Black and wearing dark clothing, ran in the direction of Hassett Street and Greyfriars car park. No arrests have been made.

On Friday, police cordons remained in place in the town centre, while Thomas's family and friends have been visiting the scene to pay their respects.

A tribute left by his grandparents read: "Tom, you were taken from us so young. We will love you always. Nan and Grandad xx."

ITV News Anglia reporter Claire McGlasson - at the scene:

"Family members, including Thomas' grandparents, are holding a vigil nearby with lit candles and photographs.

"They are providing and receiving comfort from those who are stopping to lay flowers or ask about Thomas, including some who look to be friends or fellow pupils.

"Some have come with parents or in small groups.

"The family are braving the cold and have been for at least an hour this morning."

Det Chief Insp Katie Dounias said: "This is an absolutely shocking incident in which a teenage boy has been stabbed to death in a busy town centre.

"We have a dedicated team of detectives working on this investigation and supporting Thomas's family at this incredibly difficult time for them.

"I would urge anyone who saw what happened or has any information to come forward and speak to police and help us bring those responsible to justice.

“We’re aware that there are images and videos circulating on social media. Please refrain from sharing any such clips and instead contact police.”

Bedford Academy's headteacher said he was "deeply upset and shocked" by Mr Taylor's killing.

Bedford's elected mayor Tom Wootton said: "This is a truly tragic and senseless loss of a young life in the heart of our community.

"My thoughts and deepest sympathies are with the family and friends of the victim during this heartbreaking time.

"I strongly urge anyone who witnessed what happened or who may have information, no matter how small, to come forward and assist the police in their efforts ."
