A 12-year-old rescue dog has been crowned as the UK's ugliest dog.

Muppet, a Chinese Crested from Peterborough, won the title after the judges sifted through scores of entries from dog owners who were each convinced their pet was the worst looking.

Described as "beautiful inside and out" by his owner Bev Nicholson, Muppet has already hit the TV screens by appearing on ITV's This Morning alongside some of the other finalists.

After being given the crown, Muppet enjoyed his prize of a pamper session at a luxury doggie spa followed by a Christmas-themed photoshoot.

Ms Nicholson, who runs a pet shop in Peterborough, said she thought he was "quite gorgeous" despite being aware he is "an odd one".

She said: "I know people say there’s no such thing as an ugly dog, but it is just a term of endearment.

"There are ugly humans - the difference is Muppet has inner beauty. He’s not just a pink dog with a combover."

Ms Nicholson said she believed beauty was in the "eye of the beholder".

Muppet comes from a family of winners of the dubious title.

He follows in the paw prints of his brother Mugly who was also crowned the world's ugliest dog in 2012.

He succeeds last year's winner, Peggy who has since catapulted to fame, appearing in this summer's blockbuster Deadpool and Wolverine movie.

Head judge Matt Dahan said he was keen to see what the future had in store for this year’s winner.

"We didn’t think we would find another dog like last year's winner Peggy, but Muppet manages to be both cute and ugly all at the same time and we think he has the same star quality," he said.

"He is so loved and pampered by Bev which is lovely to see and we are delighted they enjoyed the pamper session and photoshoot.

"We’re all really happy to name Muppet as the winner of our competition and are looking forward to finding out what the future holds for them both."
