A city-centre market has been partially reopened after a fire.

Firefighters tackled a blaze at an outdoor market in Milton Keynes near the Centre:MK shopping centre in Midsummer Boulevard on Tuesday.

Although clear-up work continues, more than 50% of stalls have reopened – some in different positions to usual - and the council said more would be open by the weekend, some on temporary locations using car parking spaces.

"For everyone’s safety, sections of surrounding roads will remain closed as engineering inspections and tests are completed," a spokesperson for Milton Keynes City Council said.

"This process may take several weeks and will determine the extent of repairs needed to Secklow Gate Bridge and other infrastructure."

Eleven appliances and crews tackled the blaze at about 7.30pm on Tuesday evening - a fire which investigators believe started due to an electrical fault.

The council is urging local people to support stallholders in the run-up to the festive period.

A spokesperson said: "We invite local people to show their support by shopping at Milton Keynes Market, as this will help stallholders at this very important time of the year."
