They are the games all of us over a certain age will remember - Space invaders, Pong, Pacman and Tetris to name but a few.
Now an exhibition aptly named Gaming Generations, featuring some of the most influential games of the past 45 years, is underway.
It is being run by the Centre for Computing History at the Grand Arcade in Cambridge.
It features all the classics from Space Invaders, Pong, and Pac-Man to Wii Sports, Mario, and Sonic!
Katrina Bowen, video game archivist at the museum said
"As the speed and power of computers have increased, video games have developed to become more and more sophisticated and immersive. We have seen games transform from the simple black and white Pong to games like Elite Dangerous in full virtual reality! Video games demonstrate how computers have inspired human creativity and imagination in recent decades."
The video game industry is almost as big as the UK film and music industries combined. Over 31 million people in the UK play games on consoles, mobile devices and online.
Jason Fitzpatrick, CEO at the museum said
"We are deeply grateful to Raspberry Pi for sponsoring the exhibition and to the Grand Arcade for helping make this exhibition possible.
Our playable exhibition will run until the end of 2021 and helps support the museum's video game preservation work. We're hopeful that visitors to the exhibition will see our work and consider donating their old game consoles, games and computers."
