Norwich Theatre Royal to host shows in big top in Chapelfield Gardens
Norwich Theatre Royal has announced a series of performances will be staged inside a temporary auditorium located in the city's Chapelfield Gardens.
The theatre has joined forces with Lost in Translation Circus, whose tent will be used to stage the shows between 10 August and 20 September.
Despite performance venues being allowed to open from 1 August, the Theatre Royal is remaining closed because bosses feel social distancing would not be possible inside.
The programme of performances has been labelled Interlude, and includes stand-up comedy from Jimmy Carr and Mark Watson, as well as music, cabaret and circus.
Stephen Crocker, CEO of the Theatre Royal, said: "The return to attending live performance still feels out-of-reach but, through Interlude, we hope to bridge that gap in a unique and, most importantly, Covid-secure way that not only delights our regular audiences but sees our city centre come alive over the summer, generating important visitors and footfall for the benefit of the whole economy."
The big top will have its capacity reduced by two-thirds in order for social distancing regulations to be followed.
Other social distancing measures:
Audiences seated in bubbles.
Sides of the tent lifted to allow for ventilation.
Refreshments ordered via an app.
Shows will be performed without an interval.
Massimiliano Rossetti, Artistic Director of Lost in Translation Circus, said he was looking forward to being back on stage.
He said: “It’s been a great pleasure to work with such an amazing creative team to bring this beautiful event to Norwich, reminding us of the importance of live theatre.
"Personally I'm also very happy that I will be able to perform again with my company Lost in Translation Circus and make people smile once again. Interlude will bring together Norwich like never before.”
Tickets for the shows go on sale from the 3 August.
