Banner proposal over Essex coastal town sparks social-media hunt for Amber
When Dan Smyth's big plans to pop the question to his long-term girlfriend were scuppered by the coronavirus, he had to quickly come up with a Plan B.
And while Walton-on-the-Naze's seafront may not quite match the romantic canals of Venice, the would-be fiance certainly caught the attention of the locals - as well as partner Amber Dewick.
What followed was a social-media hunt by people desperate to find out what her answer had been.
Dan's romantic gesture took the form of a banner in the skies above the seaside resort, with the message “Amber will you marry me.”
He had hoped to pop the question in Venice but when the trip was cancelled due to coronavirus travel restrictions he had to come up with a new plan.
Thankfully, it did. Although midwife Amber admits she made him wait for the all-important answer.
Shortly after the sign appeared in the sky, locals took to social media to try to find Amber.
One wrote: “Does anyone know who it is and has she said yes...would love to know as such a lovely way to ask someone…”
On hearing about the search, Amber put them out of their misery, replying: “It was me and yes I did say yes.”
The couple, who are from Harlow, are currently buying a house and hope to get married in 2022.
