Mustang drivers rally together to help fund Northampton mother's terminal cancer treatment
A group of car enthusiasts have raised £30,000 to help fund the cancer treatment of a mother-of-three from Northampton.
Kim Scholefield has a rare form of cancer called Nasopharyngeal cancer which affects the pharynx.
Kim was first diagnosed with cancer in 2016 and was in remission, but the cancer returned earlier this year.
Doctors found a new 12mm tumour but said they could not operate due to the proximity to the brain and told Kim she had less than a year to live.
When Kim was told the cancer she had was inoperable, her husband Rob put his prized Ford Mustang up for sale for £30,000 to help fund part of the private treatment costing around £150,000.
Rob posted an advert for his car in the Facebook group Simply Mustangs UK.
It was spotted by a group of fellow Ford Mustang owners who not only helped him find a buyer for the car, but also raised £30,000 to support his family.
"Luckily I had a Ford Mustang sitting on the driveway", Rob said.
"I've always wanted a Mustang since I was a boy, and the plan was to get one when I retire, but Kim came out of treatment and said life's too short, get one now or I'll buy it for you, so I did.
"It was my biggest asset, I'd just literally three weeks before finished paying off the loan on it, so it was mine, so I thought well I'll get it up for sale because that is £30,000 worth of treatment towards what Kim needs. I love my car but not as much as I love my wife."
Kim will start her Proton treatment next month, in the hope she can beat cancer once again.
The family still need to raise a lot of money but are now more hopeful of a future together.
"I can never forget the amount of kindness and generosity, and things they've done for this family - it does restore your faith in humanity", Rob added.
