86-year-old veteran tap dances every day for the NHS

An 86-year-old veteran from Northampton has dusted off his dancing shoes during lockdown to raise money for the NHS.

Jim Price was inspired by Bedfordshire's Captain Sir Tom Moore, and has pledged to tap dance every day for the next month to raise money for charity.

The funds will go towards Northamptonshire Health Charity, which supports Northampton General Hospital.

And just like Captain Tom, he has already smashed his fundraising target of £1,000.

Jim discovered his talent for tapping later on in life and decided to put it to good use during lockdown.

Jim said: "I was inspired by Captain Tom and I thought what can I do, well I thought all you do is you yap and you tap and I rather naively sent a letter to the general hospital thinking I won't hear anything but it's all happening as they say. So yeah it's great, and if it gets money for the local hospital, then it can't be bad, wonderful."

Jim explained that the fundraising is his way of saying thank you to staff at Northampton General Hospital for all the care he has received over the years.

Jim added: "At my time of life you get different ailments and afflictions and most of which I'm in total denial, I reject most of them and carry on. But I do have to spend some time in the general hospital, different departments and they're always very gracious and welcoming and you know, it's not an uncomfortable experience going to the hospital, it's very good."

Jim's life has been a series of different uniforms - he was in the navy for 10 years, the police and then went into security.

But lately he has found a more creative side to him, and on top of the tap dancing, he has become a bit of a poet.

This is one of his many poems: "She wrote we have a friend called Jim, who has us all befuddled, he told us he's a hard man but then likes to be cuddled. He's turned into a poet, his sonnets are insightful, and when he wears his dancing shoes his tapping is delightful. But really there's no mystery, it's Jesus he embraces, now this big old softy puts a smile on all our faces."

"Use it or lose it", that is Jim's motto, and he is certainly living proof of that.
