Statue of Nelson in Norwich found sprayed with graffiti
Norfolk Police are investigating after a statue of Nelson in Norwich was found sprayed with graffiti.
Police say they were called at 10.15am with a report that the statue of the naval captain in the Cathedral grounds had been spray painted.
Across the country, many statues have been targeted as part of Black Lives Matter protests.
Admiral Nelson was born in Burnham Thorpe in Norfolk in 1758 and became famous for his naval successes against the French during the Napoleonic War. For a long time, he was widely regarded as a heroic figure but more recently Lord Nelson's legacy has come under criticism.
He was an outspoken opponent to the abolition of the slave trade and tried to prevent abolitionist William Wilberforce from bringing about an end to Britain's involvement in the slave trade.
Norfolk Police say they are still at the early stages of their enquiries.
