Performers in Norfolk are planning a protest to highlight the Government's "failure to support the arts industry" during the pandemic.

On July 11, groups plan to gather outside venues including Norwich Puppet Theatre and The Garage before performing "half an act, joke or song before falling silent".

Organiser Paul Goldsmith, from Blofield, said it would be part of a nationwide protest, with a simultaneous demonstration set to be held in Trafalgar Square.

"It is designed to get people outside of the industry talking and supporting our cause," he said.

Organisers say the protest, which will follow social distancing rules, will be live streamed on the Internet. There will also be opportunities to donate to venues.

It comes as theatres report huge financial problems, with some living off their savings to survive during lockdown.

The boss of Northampton's main theatre, the Royal and Derngate, says the industry desperately needs more help.
