Snake stuck in Suffolk sewage system rescued by the RSPCA

Anglian Water staff working in Ufford in Suffolk got quite the surprise when they lifted a manhole cover during a routine inspection to see a snake lurking below. The grass snake had become trapped in a sewage pipe.

Keen to get the reptile to safety, they called the RSPCA for hep.

RSPCA inspectors are still unsure as to how the animal got down there, but added that grass snakes are strong swimmers that live and hunt around water.

The RSPCA says the breeding season for grass snakes is in June and July, so there's a chance you may come across their small leathery eggs in compost heaps, grass cuttings or sawdust piles between June and September. The charity asks that if you do find any eggs, please make sure you leave them undisturbed.
