Official figures reveal coronavirus deaths in the Anglia region have increased by 124

The Covid-19 death toll in the Anglia region has reached 5,486 after the latest information from care homes and the community was released.

That has added a further 124 deaths to the figures available in the region on Monday.

Weekly figures from the Office of National Statistics (ONS) combine the numbers of people dying in local care homes and the community with those dying in hospitals in the region.

The most current weekly figures released by the ONS show 213 people died in the region in the week ending 29th May compared to 300 in the previous week.

It is the lowest weekly total since 176 people died in the region in the last full week of March and it is the sixth consecutive week there has been a fall in the number of deaths.

The ONS data is the most complete set of official figures issued by the government because it uses information contained on death certificates where coronavirus is listed as a cause of death or a contributory factor.

However it takes more time to process the data so it is ten days out of date when it is published.

According to the Office of National Statistics, 5,317 people have died in the Anglia region with coronavirus since the start of the pandemic until 29th May.

The Care Quality Commission also collects information regarding residents who lose their lives in care homes. In the week to 5th June, the CQC says 46 people passed away in care homes in the Anglia region.

Each day, the NHS also reports the number of people who died in the region's hospitals. Since 30th May, 123 patients have died in hospitals in the Anglia region. That includes patients who has a positive test for coronavirus or where coronavirus was mentioned on the death certificate.

Combining the figures raises the region's total death toll from the illness to 5,486 although that number will need be confirmed in future analysis by the ONS.
