Coronavirus deaths close to 1,000 in hospitals in the Anglia region

The number of patients who have died with Covid-19 in hospitals in the Anglia region has reached 985 with a further 46 deaths announced on Saturday by NHS England.

The deaths announced in the region on Saturday were much lower than the 123 deaths announced on Friday and the 129 recorded on Thursday.

The daily figures released by NHS England cover the period up to 5pm on Friday 10 April and do not generally include people who have lost their lives in care homes or in the community.

The Princess Alexandra Hospital in Harlow has seen a total of 105 deaths since the start of the outbreak with 102 deaths at Basildon Hospital.

There were a further 9 deaths reported on Saturday at the Luton & Dunstable Hospital taking the total there to 60.

Across England a further 823, who tested positive for the coronavirus have died, bringing the total number of confirmed reported deaths in hospitals in England to 8,937.

In a statement NHS England said: "Patients were aged between 11 and 102 years old. 33 of the 823 patients (aged between 29 and 94 years old) had no known underlying health condition."

The total number of cases in the Anglia region has now reached 5,958 by 9 am on Saturday 11 April according to figures released by Public Health England. That was an increase 460 or 8% since Friday.

The total number of cases in the region has doubled since last Saturday.

Essex has the most cases in the Anglia region with nearly 1,700 cases and the biggest daily rise since yesterday was in Bedfordshire where it was up 13% to 691.

The Bedfordshire figures are the local authorities of Bedford, Luton and Central Bedfordshire combined. Cambridgeshire includes Peterborough and Essex includes Southend and Thurrock.
