Thriplow Daffodil Weekend falls victim to coronavirus

The Thriplow Daffodil Weekend in Cambridgeshire, which was due to take place at the end of March, has been cancelled due to precautions over the coronavirus.

The annual festival attracts around 15,000 visitors and raises tens of thousands of pounds for local charities.

The organisers said they had taken the decision with "deep regret" and added "obviously this is very disappointing and it was a very difficult decision to take."

It comes as it was announced on Sunday that there had been 29 cases of coronavirus confirmed in the Anglia region.

The Thriplow event, near Duxford in south Cambridgeshire, was due to take places on 28 and 29 March. The Daffodil Committee said that cancelling the event early limits the financial impact for the village and for stallholders.

The Thriplow festival started in 1969 when the church need to fund roof repairs. Over the past 50 years more than half a million pounds has been raised for local charities.

The first event in 1969 raised £206 and in 2019 it raised £60,000.

The organisers say that this year's nominated charities will be rolled over to next year.
