Are refugees in Norwich as welcome as before?

  • Video report from ITV Anglia Positive Action Intern Jemima Mukonkole

For 700 years, Norwich has taken in immigrants from Flemish weavers, to Huguenots in the 17th century.

These days the city has large Congolese, Rwandan and Syrian communities, all seeking refuge.

But is the city still living up to its welcoming reputation?

Emmie Mwembo arrived in Norwich from Congo as a teenager more than ten years ago.

Emmie is now married and works as a medical researcher at University of East Anglia.

He praises the city of Norwich for being welcoming and for offering him support as he integrated himself into the city.

Earlier this week, a community in Norwich came together to condemn a racist poster which was put up in a tower block on Brexit Day.

The poster sparked shock and anger across the country after it was shared online.

Norfolk Police confirmed it's investigating the incident as as a "racially aggravated public order incident" and the posters have been seized for forensic enquiries.
