Promises, promises: What Labour and the Tories are offering the East of England in this election

Labour and the Conservatives have offered a range of pledges for the East of England as part of their regional manifestos.

The Conservatives are promising new hospitals, more police officers and more money for all every school pupil in the region while Labour say they will transform the East of England by rebuilding public services and creating jobs.

The Conservatives set out their regional pledges at an event in one of their target seats in Peterborough on Thursday evening while on Friday Labour launched their regional manifesto in Tilbury which is in Labour's top target seat of Thurrock.

Labour won Peterborough in 2017 by just 607 votes while the Conservatives were victorious in Thurrock by just 345 votes. Both constituencies were among the closest contests in the last election.

Conservative pledges for the East of England

  • Six new hospitals and four more with upgraded services

  • More money for every school pupil in the East

  • Recruiting up to 463 new police officers in the region

  • Building the East-West rail link between Cambridge, Bedford and Milton Keynes

  • Possible restore of rail link to Wisbech

  • Up to £25million each for 12 towns in the East to help with regeneration

Labour pledges for the East of England

  • £10 billion new investment from Labour's Green Transformation fund including expanding the port in Great Yarmouth and the East-West rail link.

  • Connecting 2.1 million households and business to full-fibre broadband

  • 16,000 new council and social homes per year by 2024

  • 70,000 new "green" jobs

  • An immediate pay rise for 667,000 workers

Labour gained three seats in the Anglia region at the 2017 election taking their tally to seven.

The Conservatives won 60 of the 69 constituencies in the Anglia region at the last election two years ago.

Labour gained Peterborough, Bedford and Ipswich from the Tories in 2017 taking their total number of MPs from the region to seven.

The Liberal Democrats had one MP.
