A man who threw his terminally ill mother from a fire escape at a care home in Essex has been cleared of murder.

On Monday 10 December 2018, Robert Knight signed in to visit his mother, June Knight, at Langley Lodge Care Home, Westcliff at around 9.45pm.

He lifted the 79-year-old out of bed, placed her on a fire escape railing and dropped her to the ground below - she died at the scene.

Robert Knight calmly remained inside the care home until police arrived. The 52-year-old from The Fairway, Leigh-on-Sea, was found not guilty of murder following a trial at Basildon Crown Court.

He had previously pleaded guilty to manslaughter and he is due to be sentenced at the same court on Friday 20 September.
