Luton Town sign experienced defender Martin Cranie on free transfer
Luton Town have signed experienced defender Martin Cranie on a free transfer.
The 32-year-old helped Sheffield United secure promotion to the Premier League last season, making 17 appearances as the Blades finished second in the Championship.
Cranie also achieved promotion to the top flight with Huddersfield Town in 2017.
He's made more than 400 appearances in his career and could be a replacement for fellow full-back James Justin who is expected to join Leicester City imminently.
Cranie is Luton's second new arrival since they won the League One title.
He could make his debut against another one of his former clubs, Middlesbrough, on the opening night of the Championship season on August 2.
“Martin’s flexibility and adaptability is first class. I don’t want to put him in the category of utility player, because he doesn’t deserve that. He’s played 17 games for Sheffield United and has just got promoted to the Premier League," Luton boss Graeme Jones said.
“Technically he can play. He started life as a midfield player, but he’s played anywhere across the back four or a back five, so he’s vastly experienced and very healthy professional to sign on a free transfer. I’m delighted to bring him to Luton.”
Meanwhile, MK Dons forward Chuks Aneke has decided to join Championship newboys Charlton Athletic after turning down a new deal at Stadium MK.
The former Arsenal man was offered fresh terms by the Dons, but opted to sign for the Addicks instead.
Aneke scored 19 goals for the Dons last season as they bounced back to League One at the first attempt.
"It feels great, I'm delighted to be at such a big club," Aneke said,
"I can't wait to get started. I've played at The Valley a few times. You come here, you see the atmosphere, it will be good to come here as a Charlton player."
