Luton Town have been promoted to the Championship after Peterborough United ended Portsmouth's hopes of catching the Hatters.

Pompey knew that realistically only a win at Fratton Park would keep their automatic promotion hopes alive, but Posh turned in a superb display to run out 3-2 winners and send Luton and Barnsley up in the process.

The result, coupled with Sunderland's 2-1 defeat at Fleetwood Town, means the Hatters will be playing in the second tier for the first time since 2007 next season.

It marks a remarkable rise for the club who were playing non-league football just five years ago.

A 30-point deduction contributed to them dropping into the Conference in 2009, and it took them five years to reclaim their Football League status.

However, since then, they've been on the up and their latest promotion is their third in six seasons, and their second in succession, after they were promoted from League Two as runners up last season under Nathan Jones.

Jones left to join Championship club Stoke City in January, but under the guidance of interim manager Mick Harford, the Hatters have only lost twice since his departure and could secure the League One title if they beat Oxford United on Saturday.

Their surge up the League One table included a club record run of 28 games unbeaten, while their top scorer James Collins was recently named the division's Player of the Season.

Following confirmation of Tuesday's results, several Luton players took to Twitter to celebrate their achievement.

Incidentally, Peterborough's win means they are still in with a shout of claiming the final play-off spot.

They will go into their final game of the season against Burton Albion on Saturday trailing sixth-placed Doncaster Rovers by just a solitary point.
