Family of UEA student welcomes new focus on student mental health
The family of a student, who is thought to have taken his own life, have welcomed a new government initiative aimed at supporting first-year students at university.
The Department for Education chose University Mental Health Day to announce plans for a new taskforce which will work to give more support to those going from sixth form to higher education.
Nineteen per cent of all 16 to 24-year-olds in England have experienced a mental health illness and 94 per cent of higher education institutions say demand for counselling services is increasing.
Nick Sadler was a third-year student at the University of East Anglia when he disappeared in the early hours of February 7.
His body was found two weeks later in the lake on campus in Norwich.
Nick's family say more help is needed for university students who find themselves living away from family and juggling a lot of stress.
