Newmarket trained Cross Counter creates history by winning Melbourne Cup

The Godophin trained Cross Counter became the first British-trained racehorse to win Australia's most prestigious race, the Melbourne Cup this morning.

Trained in Newmarket and saddled by Charlie Appleby, the 8-1 backed three-year-old stormed to victory in the 158th running of the cup.

Over 80,000 people watched the world's richest two-mile handicap race worth £4 million.

It also meant that Cross Country led home a 1-2-3 for British-trained runners from Marmelo and A Prince Of Arran.
