Five people have been arrested after a driver died in a crash in Essex.

The collision between a silver Ford Fiesta and a black BMW 520 happened in Blue Mills Hill, Wickham Bishops, shortly after 11pm on Wednesday.

A man in his 30s, who was the driver of the Fiesta, died at the scene.

Essex Police said that both cars left the road and the Fiesta ended up in a hedge.

One man, two women and a teenage boy were arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving, while a third woman was arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender.

A 21-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving, failing to stop at the scene of a collision, failing to report a collision, perverting the course of justice, and escaping lawful custody, while an 18-year-old woman from Witham, an 18-year-old woman from Colchester, and a 17-year-old boy from Maldon were all arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and drink or drug driving.

“Our investigation is progressing well but I still need anyone who has information about the collision who we’ve not spoken to to come forward," Inspector Rob Brettell said.

“I particularly need to speak to anyone who saw the BMW in the moments leading up to the collision.

“I also need to speak to anyone who saw a white Vauxhall Astra which we believe may have been travelling in convoy with the BMW”.
