Samson saved! Iconic statue to go back on display in Norwich
A campaign to put one of Norwich's most iconic figures back on displayhas reached its fundraising target.
A crowd-funding campaign to raise £15,000 was set up last month, to pay for the famous Samson statue to go on show at the Museum of Norwich.
For centuries, Samson stood guard outside a Norwich nightclub, alongside his Greek equivalent, Hercules.
Over that time, Samson witnessed two World Wars and the antics of lovers and party revellers from the 30’s through to the 90’s when the building was used as a ballroom and then a nightclub.
However, time took its toll on this local hero, who was eventually encased in 60 layers of paint, hiding the stunning 17th century oak carving underneath.
Now, two decades after being removed from the ‘Samson and Hercules’ building for safekeeping, Samson has been restored to his former glory, and the man beneath the mask has been revealed.
Museum of Norwich Curator Jenny Caynes said: "Since the campaign launched we’ve received many personal memories about Samson and the good times he represents for generations of local people. We’re very grateful to everyone who has contributed and are looking forward to displaying him in pride of place in the museum so everyone can enjoy him.”
It’s hoped the statue will be unveiled in his new home by early 2019.
Samson has survived nearly 350 years already, and now thanks to this campaign he's back home, in the heart of the city.
