A campaign to stop a huge chicken farm from being built in Northamptonshire is being backed by two of the county's MPs.

The facility in Higham and Rushden would house more than half a million chickens.

The MP for Wellingborough Peter Bone and Tom Pursglove the MP for Corby have described it as "cruel and unnecessary".

The MPs will this afternoon protest against the farm by having 22 chickens in a one square meter cage to demonstrate how the birds will live.

Bedfordia Farms, who are behind the development, say the farm would be subject to stringent regulation and monitoring.

Peter Bone MP said: "This chicken farm or should I say chicken factory is totally unacceptable, the Government has said that it is against this type of American style factory farming.

"When people see the conditions the chickens are expected to survive in, they will be appalled.

"I am supporting the Cluck Off campaign and I will do everything in my power to stop this cruel and unnecessary development.”
