Work has begun on a £4.5 million revamp of Northamptonshire's Wicksteed Park nearly a century on from its original opening.

Founded in 1921 by the engineer, and park's namesake, Charles Wicksteed, the project will see a number of historic features brought back to their former glory, including the Central Piazza and Rose Garden.

Called the 'Historic Heart project', it is being funded with £1.89 million from the Heritage Lottery, with the majority of the remaining investment coming from the Wicksteed Charitable Trust itself.

Northamptonshire County Council and Kettering Borough Council are also donating smaller amounts.
