A car thief who tried to evade officers - but was tracked down by a determined police dog - has been jailed for two years.

Elroy Samuel, of Boscombe Court in Letchworth, was chased by PD Blue and his handler for around an hour over two miles through the Baldock area of Hertfordshire.

Police had lost sight of him but Blue was able to pick up his scent as soon as he arrived on the scene.

He led his handler down a footpath, into thick bushes and across a knee-deep stream.

The pair found 26-year-old's black jacket along the way, which told them they were on the right track. They eventually caught up with him hiding in thick undergrowth near the A507, close to Stotfold.

Hertfordshire Police has released a video of the chase, and Samuel's subsequent arrest, to show the hard work of its police dogs.

The thief was charged with a number of offences including aggravated vehicle taking, dangerous driving, failing to stop for police, and using a vehicle without insurance.
