British astronaut Tim Peake will be in Hertfordshire later to open a new technology centre.

The STEM centre at Airbus in Stevenage focuses on science, technology, engineering and maths and hopes to inspire the next generation of space technicians, and engineers.

It cost £2.5 million and will be operated in conjunction with local further education college North Hertfordshire College.

It has been built around the Mars Yard test area. Credit: ITV Anglia.

Earlier this year Tim Peake returned to earth after a six-month stay on the International Space Station.

He will be met by local students at the opening, the first of an estimated 27,000 that will visit the centre in the next five years.
