Councils faces criticism for failing to open new homeless shelter before Christmas

Northampton Borough Council is facing criticism for not getting a new homeless shelter open in time for Christmas.

The emergency night shelter was originally due to open to rough sleepers in November, in what used to a social club.

However, the council says a lack of volunteers means it has to be put back until the new year.

The council has budgeted £70,000 or the new night shelter - it needs at least 60 volunteers to run it. Only half that number have come forward.

There are concerns the the delay leaves homeless people with even fewer options.
