Station fire forces closure of rail line for a second day

A fire that tore through a derelict railway station in Suffolk has forced the closure of the line for a second day.

Crews from Bury St Edmunds, Newmarket, Mildenhall, Brandon, Elmswell, Ixworth, Clare, Long Melford, Wickhambrook and Cambridge fought to stop the fire spreading to the line itself on Saturday 10 September. The blaze at the old railway station in Higham has left the building unsafe, and work's going on to demolish it.

It means all rail lines between Bury St Edmunds and Kennett are blocked.

Train services running through these stations have been cancelled or revised.

Greater Anglia says disruption is expected until 6pm tonight. Train services between Bury St Edmunds and Cambridge and between Bury St Edmunds and Ely have been suspended. Replacement buses are in operation.
