India Chipchase: The night she was murdered

India Chipchase.

Edward Tenniswood lived alone in the house where he raped and murdered India Chipchase.

He rarely left his squalid surroundings. He covered his computer monitor, keyboard and mouse, in cling film, collected newspaper clippings of women that reminded him of his ex-girlfriends, and claimed he once dated famous fashion model Heather Stewart-Whyte.

In the early hours of Saturday the 30th of January, Tenniswood said he took India Chipchase on what he called the "grand tour" of his home. He said he and India shared a "loving" evening.

But it was all a fantasy. In reality, his neighbours say he was a loner.

When Tenniswood approached India, she was on her own outside NB's nightclub in Northampton after getting separated from her friends.

She was nearly three times the drink drive limit, and was seen crying and saying she wanted to go home.

Tenniswood told he would get her home safe, but instead he lured her to a taxi and took her back to his house.

He said he killed India by accident, but rather than call an ambulance he left her and went out for a kebab.

When India didn't turn up for work at The Collingtree Pub the next morning, an appeal was launched to find her.

While India's body lay in his bedroom Tenniswood was drinking beer in a hotel reception and even used the computer to check news sites for progress on the search for her.

He was arrested there the next day and told police: "I suppose you've been to the house - you've found what you're looking for."

Officers found India's body on a mattress in his bedroom. He had covered her with a sheet and arranged her hair around her head like a halo.

She had more than 30 injuries and Tenniswood's blood under one of her fingernails.

He took advantage of a vulnerable young woman who had just wanted to go home.
