A 91-year-old war veteran from Essex who was tricked out of £9,000 has got his money back thanks to a campaign from a local newspaper.

Cyril Banks from Bishop's Stortford was tricked by a conman who claimed to be from Scotland Yard back on June 20.

However, Cyril has now been reimbursed as a result of a GoFundMe page which was set up by the Herts & Essex Observer and its readers who were touched by the story.

So far, more than £13,000 has been raised and Cyril says he will be eternally grateful for the support.

Cyril is well known in his home town for his efforts in collecting for the Royal British Legion's Poppy Appeal and has taken part in abseiling to raise money for charity.
