Leading plant scientist becomes a Dame as Norfolk people are listed in birthday honours

Dame Caroline Dean Credit: John Innes Centre

A pioneering plant science expert from Norwich has been made a Dame in the Queen's Birthday Honours.

Professor Caroline Dean is the project leader at the Cell and Developmental Biology department at the John Innes Centre in Norwich.

Her pioneering studies of epigenetics have demonstrated how plants carry a memory of environmental conditions by reprogramming their genes. Her work has helped to improve scientific understanding of crops and the effects of climate change. Her discoveries in gene silencing have aided understanding in areas of biology beyond her own field.

Also honoured is hospital governor and former consultant surgeon Hugh Sturzaker, 75, from Great Yarmouth.

Mr Sturzaker is made an MBE for services to health and the community in Great Yarmouth.

After serving a distinguished career as a consultant surgeon, he was elected to serve as a governor at James Paget NHS Foundation Trust where he was appointed lead governor, a role he still holds.

He was the driving force of the project to create the Louise Hamilton Centre in the grounds of the hospital which provides support and care for those with life-threatening illnesses.

He's also campaigned tirelessly to raise money for the Great Yarmouth Minster, which is the largest Parish Church in England. He's also involved in the St George's Theatre Trust and has campaigned on the dangers of binge drinking. In addition to all of this he and his wife work tirelessly every year with the RNLI to raise funds by holding an annual Lifeboat Ball.
