Lightning and heavy downpours caused flooding and fires in Bedfordshire last night.

Here are some pictures you sent in of the thunderstorms.

At Hitchin in Hertfordshire, 19 mm (0.75 inches) of rain fell mostly during a thunderstorm late on Tuesday afternoon.

Video below taken by Graham Custance in Dunstable reveals the extent of the downpours.

Police there warned people to avoid the town centre after roads were flooded.

There was also flash flooding in Cranfield that led to floodwaters entering people's homes.

Police said that due to demand they were only able to deal with life-threatening emergencies.

It was a busy evening for Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue as they were inundated with calls.

By the end of the night they had:

  • Received 150 calls related to the flooding and lightning

  • Put out a roof fire caused by lightning

  • Rescued two elderly people trapped in their homes by floodwaters

After the storms, people on Dunstable Downs in Bedfordshire were treated to a spectacular sunset.
