10 facts you didn't know about X Factor sensation Alexandra Burke

It's been quite a few years for Alexandra Burke.

Her career started on ITV, winning the X Factor, and the success has come thick and fast ever since.

She's now sold over 4 million records and is in the process of putting together another album.

She's also been enjoying life on the stage too, starring in 'The Bodyguard', which is in Norwich for the next couple of weeks.

Here are some facts about the singing sensation...

1.) Her mum was a famous singer

Alexandra has music in her blood, largely thanks to her mum who was the lead singer of Soul II Soul.

The group were most famous for their song 'Back to Life (However Do You Want Me)' which was top of the UK Singles Chart for four weeks in 1989.

2.) She was a child star

Alexandra was used to the limelight at an early age and appeared on the BBC talent show 'Star for a Night' at just 12 years of age.

The programme was presented by Jane McDonald, while Nigel Martin-Smith and Barbara Windsor were judges.

Alexandra eventually finished as runner-up in the competition, just missing out to Joss Stone (who you also may have heard of!).

3.) She used to work as a club singer

Before auditioning for the X Factor, Alexandra made her money by singing in nightclubs up and down the UK.

She also went on tour with 'Young Voices', a charity which raises money for children with Leukemia.

4.) She had an unsuccessful X Factor audition

It seems hard to believe now, but Alexandra was actually turned away from the X Factor in 2005.

She made it through to the final seven in Louis Walsh's 16-24 category but didn't progress any further.

Manchester singer Shayne Ward went on to win the competition that year.

5.) She's has the biggest-selling X Factor winner's single ever

Alexandra's big moment came three years later in 2008 when her dreams came true.

She beat JLS to win the X Factor and sung with Beyoncé in the final.

Her debut single 'Hallelujah' was a huge success, going on to sell 1.25 million copies and making it the biggest-selling single in the history of the show.

6.) Her debut album topped the charts

A year after her X Factor win, Alexandra's first album proved to be a big hit too.

'Overcome' went straight in at number one, selling 132,000 copies in the first week, while her single 'Bad Boys' also claimed the top spot.

7.) She was the face of Dolce & Gabbana

It wasn't just in the music industry where Alexandra enjoyed success.

In 2009, she signed a six figure contract to become the face of luxury Italian brand Dolce & Gabbana.

8.) She used to go out with Jermain Defoe

Alexandra had a relationship with Premier League footballer Jermain Defoe before the couple split in 2012.

The 33-year-old recently scored 17 goals to help keep Sunderland in the top flight.

9.) She returned to X Factor as a judge

Alexandra returned to the X Factor as a judge in the 2011 series as a replacement for Kelly Rowland.

There, she sat on the same panel as Louis Walsh, Gary Barlow and Tulisa Contostavlos.

10.) She's now a West End star

Alexandra is now earning rave reviews for her starring role in 'The Bodyguard' as Rachel Marron - the role made famous by Whitney Houston back in the 90s.

The show is touring the UK will be at the Theatre Royal in Norwich until June 4.
