£10m scheme to stop flash flooding in Norwich
A £10m pound scheme to tackle flash flooding in Norwich begins today.
The first phase of the work will update the drainage systems in the Sprowston area.
Norfolk County Council says the existing infrastructure is old and cannot cope with heavy or prolonged rain - leading to flash flooding like that seen across the city in the summer of 2014.
The work will involve laying new pipes to help drain the water more effectively.
Roads will need to be closed and traffic will be diverted.
The work is expected to continue until September. Each area will be closed for up to 12 days.
The local authority said the improvements had been funded through a combination of a £9.1m grant from the Department for Transport and county council money.
