A man thought to be Britain's oldest and unluckiest racing punter - affectionately known as "George the Second" - has died just two weeks before his 105th birthday.

George Atkinson, from Swaffham, placed his first bet at the age of 12.

But despite more than 90 years of attempts, the 104-year-old had never backed a winner.

He had once again hoped to turn his luck around when he planned to place a bet on his 105th birthday later this month.

Staff at his local bookies were always pleased to see George pop in for a flutter - and baked him a cake to mark each birthday.
