The arrival of the 29th February can only mean one thing - it's a leap year.

Every four years an extra day is added to the end of February as a means of keeping our clocks and calendars in sync with the Earth and its seasons.

A complete orbit of the earth around the sun takes exactly 365.2422 days to complete, but our calendar uses 365 days.

If you're feeling hard done by because you've had to work to work a whole extra day this year for no extra pay, spare a thought for the 4.1 million people worldwide who were born on that extra day, meaning they only get a birthday once every four years.

The chances of being born on February 29th are one in 1,461.

Arriving just after midnight, Eloise Sara Watson was the first of the 'Leap Day' arrivals at Addenbrooke's Hospital this year.

Her Mum and Dad plan to have a big celebration for her birthday every four years, but will celebrate on 1st March - St. David's Day - every other year in honour of her Dad, David, who is half Welsh.

A couple of hours later and just down the corridor was another new arrival.

Born 2 weeks early and weighing over 11lb, newborn Alfie's mum Charlotte is just relieved they're both healthy.

It's not the first time one of her babies has been in the spotlight - in 2012 her son Harry was born in the Rosie maternity unit at Addenbrooke's on the day it was officially opened by the Queen.

Also hoping for something to celebrate today were staff at the Cambridge University Royal Botanic Garden, who passed up the chance to make an extra day's profit and opened their doors for free.

It's considered traditional on the 29th February for women to propose to men. The Garden named it's open day 'Marry Me Monday' in the hope they would have some visitors getting down on one knee.
