A gang of ram raiders have been sentenced to 22 years for carrying out a terrifying series of thefts at shops and banks across the region.

The five used JCB diggers to rip cash machines from the walls of buildings at Reepham in Norfolk, Bury St Edmunds and Fulbourn in Cambridgeshire.

In all, they stole more than £300,000 from the cash machines alone.

As their crime spree continued they also caused damage estimated at more than a £250,000.

The gang would break into houses, steal cars off the drive then use them as getaway vehicles for the ram raids.

They were caught when Bedfordshire Police left a trap - a car, fitted with a tracker with the keys in the ignition.

The court heard it was bait and that they took it.
