One of John Constable's most famous works has taken centre stage in his home county.

"Salisbury Cathedral from the Meadows" was reportedly described by the artist himself as his finest piece.

It was painted in 1831 and today went on display at the Wolsey Art Gallery at the Christchurch Mansion in Ipswich.

It is the second masterpiece to go on display in the region in the past week.

On Monday, it was revealed two bronze sculptures at the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge were likely to be early works of the Italian master Michelangelo.

Constable's painting has gone on display in Suffolk among the biggest collection of his works outside of London.

The visit is its second stop of a tour of Britain which will last five years in total.
