Rugby legend Wayne Shelford reminisces on World Cup and Northampton
Twenty-five years ago New Zealand rugby legend Wayne Shelford played his first game for Northampton Saints. His presence, as player and captain, would help shape the way the club played the game in future years.
In the short time he was at Franklin's Gardens the Saints were transformed from a struggling First Division club to championship contenders, and Pilkington Cup finalists in 1991.
Shelford joined the Saints three years after helping New Zealand win the inaugural Rugby World Cup on home soil against France.
Now back in North Harbour on New Zealand's North Island, Shelford has been recounting his memories of playing in the 1987 Rugby World Cup Final, and his arrival at Northampton.
