Twelve horses hit and killed by two trains at Cambridgeshire level crossing

Twelve horses have been killed after running loose on rail tracks in Cambridgeshire.

Two trains travelling in opposite directions were involved in the incident at the Fen Road level crossing in Milton, near Cambridge yesterday evening. It led to major travel disruption and a female passenger was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

Officers from British Transport Police (BTP) are appealing for information and witnesses to come forward.

The incident happened just before 5.15pm on Wednesday, 19 November.

The breeds of the horses, which are believed to have come from the fields in the Fen Road area, are unknown. Officers are keeping an open mind into the cause of the incident.

Cambridgeshire Constabulary, the ambulance service and fire service also attended the incident. A female passenger was taken to hospital with minor injuries and later discharged.

Police are appealing information.
