Police tests have revealed the dog that killed a six-month-old baby in Daventry was a banned breed, an American pit bull.

The baby died shortly after the attack at her mother’s home in Morning Star Road on the Timken estate on the evening of October 3.

At the time of the attack, she was being cared for by her maternal grandmother who suffered bite injuries attempting to protect the baby. The dog was destroyed by vets at the scene.

Police say a post mortem on the dog has revealed it was an American pit bull, a prohibited breed under the 1991 Dangerous Dogs Act.

An inquest into the baby's death will be opened on Wednesday October 15.

Police say the attack has shocked Daventry. The force has thanked everyone who attended the incident for trying to save the baby's life.

The case has also been referred to the LSCBN Serious Case Review Committee in November which will then consider it for independent scrutiny by the Local Safeguarding Children Board Northamptonshire
