Inquest into the death of "hero" police officer
An inquest is taking place today into the death of a "true hero" police officer who was shot dead as he went to protect a member of the public.
Pc Ian Dibell who was 41 was killed near his home in Clacton-on-Sea when he was off duty on July 9 last year. It is thought he was going to the aid of Trevor Marshall who was injured in the attack.
His suspected killer, Peter Reeve, 64, shot himself dead in a churchyard in Writtle, near Chelmsford, the following day.
Police officers of all ranks, Home Secretary Theresa May, family members and members of the public attended a memorial service for Pc Dibell at St James Church in Clacton-on-Sea in August.
The inquest is being presided over by Essex and Thurrock coroner Caroline Beasley-Murray sitting at Chelmsford Crown Court.
