Two pilots had a lucky escape after their gliders were involved in a mid-air collision over Newmarket.

Emergency services were called to the incident at just after 4pm this afternoon after witnesses reported seeing a parachutist coming down above the Snailwell Road area of Newmarket just after 4pm today.

Suffolk Police said they believed a glider competition was taking place in the area.

East of England Ambulance service reported that both pilots were found in a field close to Newmarket Gallops.

One pilot managed to parachute to safety, the other is believed to have managed to land their aircraft.

One pilot was unhurt, the other was found unconscious but had not suffered any serious injuries. That pilot has been taken to Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge.

Air traffic investigators have been informed.
