Newmarket housing estate plan rejected
A plan for 1,200 homes which campaigners said would have 'destroyed' Newmarket as the home of horse racing has been rejected. The Planning Inspectorate has thrown Lord Derby's proposal to build the new housing estate on his land at Hatchfield Farm on the edge of the Suffolk town.
A planning application to develop Hatchfield Farm was submitted in December 2009. This was rejected by Forest Heath District Council in June 2010. Lord Derby then appealed against the decision in January 2011 and it went to a planning inquiry. On Friday the Communities Secretary and the Planning Inspectorate upheld the council's decision.
