UK Athletics charged over death of Paralympian Abdullah Hayayei

UK Athletics, and one of its former senior officials, have been charged with manslaughter following the death of Paralympian Abdullah Hayayei.

The 36-year-old represented the United Arab Emirates in the discus, javelin and shot put and died after a metal throwing cage fell on him during a training session in July 2017.

Hayayei was training for the shot put in preparation for the World Paralympic Athletics Championships at Newham Leisure Centre in east London and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Today police and the Crown Prosecution service said Keith Davies, who was the head of sport for the 2017 Championships, had been charged with gross negligence manslaughter and a health and safety offence.

UK Athletics Limited, the national governing body for athletics, has also been charged with corporate manslaughter and a health and safety offence.

UK Athletics and Davies are due to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on January 31.
