Donald Trump named Time's Person of the Year
Donald Trump said it was an "honour" to be named Time Magazines Person of the Year
President-elect Donald Trump has been named Time magazines Person of the Year.
Speaking at the New York Stock Exchange Board Room on Thursday, Trump said it was an "honour" to be recognised by the magazine for the second time.
Time CEO Jessica Sibley said Trump was chosen as Person of the Year for "remaking American politics and in doing so reordering the world as we know it".
Other finalists for this year's award included Vice President Kamala Harris, X owner Elon Musk, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Kate, the Princess of Wales.
Trump was also Time's Person of the Year in 2016, when he was first elected to the White House.
Trump celebrated by ringing the opening bell at the New York Stock Exchange.
The NYSE regularly invites celebrities and business leaders to participate in the ceremonial opening trading and it has become a marker of culture and politics.
Last year, Time CEO Jessica Sibley rang the NYSE opening bell to unveil the magazine’s 2023 Person of the Year, Taylor Swift.
During Trump's first term, his wife, Melania Trump, rang the bell to promote her “Be Best” initiative on children’s well-being.
In a Time article, editor in chief Sam Jacobs said that unlike other years, the decision over who to choose as Person of the Year was not difficult.
He said that on the cusp of his second presidency, we are "living in the Age of Trump" and that his recent election success had "remade American politics in the process."
"Since he began running for President in 2015, perhaps no single individual has played a larger role in changing the course of politics and history than Trump."
Jacobs said Trump was chosen for Person of the Year "for marshaling a comeback of historic proportions, for driving a once-in-a-generation political realignment, for reshaping the American presidency and altering America’s role in the world."
Trump has long had a fascination with being on the cover of Time, where he first made an appearance in 1989.
He has falsely claimed to hold the record for cover appearances, and The Washington Post reported in 2017 that Trump had a fake picture of himself on the cover of the magazine hanging in several of his golf country clubs.
