Several websites and apps have been hit with problems as people struggled to do their online shopping, make calls, access mobile data and listen to music.

Sky apologised earlier on Tuesday after its mobile network went down across the UK, with more than 1,000 customers reporting problems at around midday.

The company tweeted: "We are aware that some Sky Mobile customers are experiencing intermittent issues with their service right now.

"We are investigating the issue and we are sorry for any inconvenience this may be causing."

Users took to Twitter to complain about not being able to make calls or use mobile data.

There were problems reported in London, Birmingham, Dublin, Glasgow and Edinburgh, according to Down Detector.

Tens of thousands of users across the world are also reporting outages with Amazon, including Amazon Web Services and its Prime music and video services, as of 4.30pm on Tuesday.

Social media users complain about being unable to listen to music and being unable to purchase items on the website.

The crash comes weeks before Christmas, as many look to buy gifts for their loved ones.

There are also increasing reports of problems among UK users with other apps, including Tinder, Ring and Duolingo.

And hundreds of O2 users reported problems around midday.
