UK reports 214 further Covid-19 deaths and nearly 40,000 new confirmed cases
The UK has recorded almost 40,000 new cases of Covid-19 and 214 more deaths within 28 days of a positive test, the government said on Wednesday.
The number of people who have died from the virus now stands at 142,338.
Separate figures published by the Office for National Statistics show there have been 167,000 deaths registered in the UK where Covid-19 was mentioned on the death certificate.
The UK also recorded 39,329 new confirmed cases of Covid on Wednesday.
Cases have been falling in recently, down almost 15% in the past seven days.
England
31,541 new cases of Covid-19 were confirmed in England on Wednesday, as well as 170 new deaths.
Scotland
Scotland reported 3,852 new cases of Covid-19 on Wednesday and a further 19 deaths.
Wales
Wales recorded 18 new deaths on Wednesday and another 2,171 new cases.
Northern Ireland
Northern Ireland recorded 1,765 new cases on Wednesday and a further seven deaths.
